The Painesville Community Gathers to Learn About the Story of Frank Tejeda at HOLA Ohio.
Painesville, OH – “Mi carnal Frank Mariano Tejeda Jr. was something else,” said Juan Tejeda, author of the book Mi Carnal Frank, a tribute to his older brother, who was considered a staunch advocate for justice and one of the most influential Mexican American politicians in San Antonio and Texas.
On Saturday, October 12, as the final event in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the HOLA Ohio center and the community had the opportunity to listen to excerpts from the book, read by the author himself. Juan shared the story of his family, who lived through the era of the “Sons and Daughters of the Depression” in Texas during the 1930s, a time marked by a severe economic crisis that left millions unemployed, where Mexican immigrants faced intense discrimination by Americans.
The presentation was accompanied by family photographs and a deep sense of nostalgia as they remembered Frank, a man who passed away in 1997 at the age of 51 due to a brain tumor. However, his life was a testament to exceptional achievements. “Frank was smart, disciplined, he wanted to excel at everything he did. He had unwavering honesty and an innate ability to connect with people; he had friends who were both Republicans and Democrats, and they all supported him. Of course, those were different times,” commented Juan Tejeda.
The adversity faced by Mexicans during that time was a source of inspiration for Frank Mariano Tejeda, who was a son, father, San Antonio native, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, lawyer, Texas State Representative, Texas Senator, and U.S. Congressman. The audience attending the reading felt deeply inspired by Frank’s life, which sparked an enriching dialogue about the importance of fostering a legacy of struggle and political representation in future generations. In Painesville, where the Latino community, mostly of Mexican descent, represents 30% of the population, there is still no local political representation.
The reading was accompanied by conjunto music, a genre that tells the struggles of Mexicans in the face of discrimination and racism, expressing the sentiments of the Raza in this territory of the United States. The songs, filled with emotion and history, honored the memory of a Mexican American hero who filled everyone present with pride. The evening concluded with a delightful dinner featuring authentic green pozole, potato tacos, and drinks made from hibiscus and lime with chia, along with fresh fruit. Painesville, OH- “Mi carnal Frank Mariano Tejeda Jr. era alguien muy especial”, mencionó Juan Tejeda, autor del libro Mi Carnal Frank, una obra en homenaje a su hermano mayor, quien fue considerado un firme defensor de la justicia y uno de los políticos mexicoamericanos más influyentes en San Antonio y Texas.
El sábado 12 de octubre, como evento de cierre en conmemoración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana, el centro HOLA Ohio y la comunidad tuvieron la oportunidad de escuchar fragmentos del libro, leídos por el propio autor. Juan compartió la historia de su familia, quienes vivieron la época de los “Hijos e hijas de la Depresión” en Texas durante la década de 1930, un tiempo marcado por una severa crisis económica que dejó a millones sin trabajo y donde los inmigrantes mexicanos enfrentaban una intensa discriminación por parte de los estadounidenses.
La presentación estuvo acompañada de fotografías familiares y una profunda nostalgia al recordar a Frank, un hombre que falleció en 1997 a los 51 años debido a un tumor cerebral. Sin embargo, su vida fue un testimonio de logros excepcionales. “Frank era inteligente, disciplinado, quería sobresalir en todo lo que hacía. Tenía una honestidad implacable y una habilidad innata para caer bien a las personas; contaba con el apoyo tanto de republicanos como de demócratas, algo que, claro, sucedía en otros tiempos”, comentó Juan Tejeda.
La adversidad que enfrentaron los mexicanos en esa época fue una inspiración para Frank Mariano Tejeda, quien fue hijo, padre, nativo de San Antonio, un veterano condecorado de la Guerra de Vietnam, abogado, Representante Estatal de Texas, Senador de Texas y Congresista de los Estados Unidos. El público que asistió a la lectura se sintió profundamente inspirado por la vida de Frank, lo que generó un diálogo enriquecedor sobre la importancia de fomentar en las nuevas generaciones un legado de lucha y representación política. En Painesville, donde la comunidad latina, mayoritariamente de origen mexicano, representa un 30% de la población, aún no existe ninguna representación política local.
La lectura estuvo amenizada por música de conjunto, un género que narra las luchas de los mexicanos frente a la discriminación y el racismo, y expresa el sentir de la Raza en este territorio de Estados Unidos. Las canciones, llenas de sentimiento e historia, honraron la memoria de un héroe mexicoamericano que llenó de orgullo a todos los presentes. Al finalizar, Juan Tejeda firmó libros, se tomó fotos con los asistentes y vendió discos.
