Our Executive Director, Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, Receives the 2024 Reverend Vincent R. Miller Community Impact Award from the NAACP.

We are proud to share that Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, Executive Director of the HOLA Ohio Center, has been recognized with the prestigious The Reverend Vincent R. Miller Community Impact Award by the NAACP. This award highlights her tireless dedication and significant impact on our community throughout the years.

The Story Behind HOLA Ohio
Veronica founded HOLA in 1999 as a grassroots organization to support and advocate for the growing Hispanic community in northeast Ohio. What began as a simple idea has grown into an essential community center, helping farmworkers, immigrants, and Latino families—primarily from Mexico and Puerto Rico—who came to the region to work in nurseries. With a background as a journalist in Ashtabula, Veronica recognized the need for a community space that empowered the most vulnerable, and HOLA Ohio was born.

A Legacy of Leadership and Service
Over the years, Veronica has received numerous awards for her leadership in the community, including:

• The Cleveland Cavaliers “DIFF Maker” Award
• The “Cleveland Business Women of Note” Award
• The “Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan” Award
• Induction into the Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame

Recently, she has collaborated closely with the NAACP and Women In NAACP (W.I.N.) on voter registration initiatives, focusing on reinstating voters who had been removed from the rolls.

An Unforgettable Evening at the LA MALFA Center
The award ceremony took place on Saturday, October 19 at the LA MALFA Center, offering an unforgettable experience for all attendees. The evening was filled with joy, featuring a delicious dinner, exciting raffles, fun games, and a spectacular jazz band performance, creating a festive atmosphere.

A Message of Hope and Unity
Veronica has become a beacon of light, uniting our communities toward greater cultural awareness, with the shared goal that everyone has a voice, a vote, and fair representation. During the ceremony, she shared heartfelt words about the significance of this award:

“The reason this award is so important to me is because our Latino community is under attack this election season. We are living in a time when harmful and false narratives about our community are being spread on television and social media. I’ve had the privilege of serving the Latino and immigrant community for 30 years, and I ask you not to believe everything you see or hear about us. Receiving this award in this context means so much to me. Thank you so much.”

Miller Community Impact Award por parte de la NAACP. Este premio destaca su compromiso incansable y su impacto significativo en nuestra comunidad a lo largo de los años.

La historia detrás de HOLA Ohio
Veronica fundó HOLA en 1999 como una organización de base para apoyar y abogar por la creciente comunidad hispana del noreste de Ohio. Lo que comenzó como una idea sencilla se ha transformado en un centro comunitario esencial, ayudando a trabajadores agrícolas, inmigrantes y familias latinas, principalmente de México y Puerto Rico, que llegaron a nuestra región para trabajar en viveros. Con una trayectoria como periodista en Ashtabula, Veronica vio la necesidad de un espacio comunitario que fortaleciera a los más vulnerables, y así nació HOLA Ohio.

Un legado de liderazgo y servicio
A lo largo de los años, Veronica ha recibido numerosos premios por su liderazgo comunitario, entre los que destacan:

• Premio “Cleveland Business Women of Note”
• Premio “Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan”
• Inclusión en el Salón de la Fama de Derechos Civiles de Ohio

Recientemente, ha trabajado en estrecha colaboración con la NAACP y las Women In NAACP (W.I.N.) en iniciativas de registro de votantes, enfocándose en aquellos votantes que habían sido eliminados de las listas.

El evento de premiación tuvo lugar el sábado 19 de octubre en el LA MALFA Center, ofreciendo una experiencia inolvidable para todos los asistentes. La noche estuvo llena de alegría con una deliciosa cena, emocionantes rifas, entretenidos juegos y la espectacular presentación de un grupo de jazz, creando un ambiente festivo. 

Un mensaje de esperanza y unidad
Veronica ha demostrado ser una luz guía, uniendo nuestras comunidades hacia una mayor conciencia cultural, con el objetivo común de que todos tengan voz, voto y representación justa. Durante la ceremonia, compartió emotivas palabras sobre la importancia de este reconocimiento:

“La razón por la que este premio es tan importante para mí es porque nuestra comunidad latina se encuentra bajo ataque. Vivimos en una época en la que se han difundido narrativas dañinas en la televisión y redes sociales sobre nuestra comunidad. He tenido el privilegio de servir a la comunidad durante 30 años y les pido que no crean en lo que ven o escuchan en estos medios. Recibir este premio en este contexto significa mucho para mí. Muchas gracias.”
