The Beginnings

In 1991, the vision for a Latino-serving organization was born when HOLA Ohio Founder and Executive Director Veronica Isabel Dahlberg began working with migrant farmworkers on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. She witnessed first-hand the injustices and hardships endured by her community. Using her bilingual skills, she provided crucial information, resources, and support to nearly 6,000 Mexican farmworkers who were harvesting tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and other vegetables.
Dahlberg visited labor camps, spent time in the fields, and saw workers collapsing from heatstroke or being cheated out of their hard-earned wages. She also discovered the strong sense of family and community that thrived within the camps—the generosity, resilience, and unwavering dignity of immigrant workers who, despite the most difficult circumstances, preserved their culture and traditions. It was then that she realized this was her true calling.
Los inicios
En 1991, nació la idea de una organización dedicada a servir a la comunidad latina, cuando Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, fundadora y directora ejecutiva de HOLA Ohio, trabajaba con trabajadores agrÃcolas migrantes en la costa este de Virginia. AllÃ, fue testigo directo de los abusos y las difÃciles condiciones que enfrentaba su comunidad. Aprovechando sus habilidades bilingües, brindó información, recursos y asistencia a casi 6,000 trabajadores agrÃcolas mexicanos, que cosechaban tomates, pimientos, calabacines y otros vegetales.
Dahlberg visitó los campamentos de trabajo, pasó tiempo en los campos y presenció cómo los trabajadores colapsaban por golpes de calor o incluso eran estafados en sus salarios. También conoció el fuerte sentido de familia y comunidad presente en los campamentos; la generosidad y el arduo trabajo de los inmigrantes, quienes, a pesar de las circunstancias más difÃciles, mantenÃan viva su cultura, sus tradiciones y su dignidad. En ese momento, supo que esta serÃa su misión de vida.
